Yes I did as you described above. Then selected ‘Format’, unticked ‘Quick Format’, and it was OK to 64% then just stopped. Note that 64% of 500(GB) is 320, so I suspect that somehow Samsung managed to rescue a faulty disk by reducing the capacity??? Just an idea!!!

You are not alone with this problem, unfortunately it looks like it may be a hardware fault, if you have the intel WiFi module then it almost certainly is

Thank you all for your suggestions, none of which unfortunately cured the problem! I’m not sure what WiFi module I have – Speccy reports it as Dell (I suspect that’s just the driver), HWINFO as Qualcomm Atheros. However once I’d discovered that pressing Fn/F2 twice allowed it to connect within a couple of seconds the problem became less of an issue. Nevertheless as curiosity got the better of me I bought a Dynamode USB wireless module and disabled the on-board one and that works perfectly so it looks like WoF was correct – duff hardware.

Dave. Thanks for your reply.  Unfortunately no joy so far – it may have to wait until I can pay him a visit!

Bob – has your gson got it going?

              Cheers. John

A look with a WiFi analyser would be useful. I have an app on my tablet (android) from farproc which is excellent and shows the signal strenghts of  all the local signals but there are several similar apps. I have had a case where a neighbour’s signal on the same channel was causing a problem (it was nearly twice the strength of the one I was investigating!) Rather than changing the channel however I opted for a pair of powerline adapters in case the neighbour changed his channel (the user was north of Glasgow and a quick trip to sort it out again wasn’t really practical).

I am selling a laptop and would like to set it up so that when the new owner switches it on it goes straight into loading the OS – just like a new PC would.

Thanks for your reply Dave. I had tried resetting the bios so it looks like a trip to the tip next week. I’ve removed the HDD (2000GB !!!) and retrieved all the docs and pics but I’ll keep the disk for a couple of weeks in case I’ve missed anything then wipe it. Cheers, John

If you have an iPhone or iPad get the flier to send a message to you with the Airline and flight number – e.g. British Airways BA1234.  Open the message and touch the details and the flight tracker will automatically open.

Have you tried Recuva ? I’ve always found it pretty reliable. Note that if it does find lost files they should be saved to a different drive to prevent overwriting the files you’re trying to recover.

Did nephew reload the OS or just transfer the HDD to the new mobo?

Is he sure the new mobo is identical and not a different version of the same model?

IIRC most Dell PCs have built in diagnostics accessed by pressing F8 (I think, or maybe F11 or F12) during bootup. Worth running if you haven’t done so already.

I’ve checked a 4 year old Dell laptop which I haven’t used for a while and on that it’s F12. (Boot options)
